Healthy meals to home cook?
I am getting a bit concerned about my dad’s weight, so I would like to do something about it.
I want to start helping my mom cooking meals that are healthy, but tasty, for my dad instead of always eating out, having things deep fried, and eating too many processed foods. We all need to start to eat fresh, yummy fruits and vegetables.
He loves meat and vegetables, stir fry, pretty much everything! Any suggestions are welcome, and if you have just a meal to suggest, don’t feel obligated to include the recipe because I can always look it up
Thanks so much! ![]()
Thank you sooo much everyone! I can’t wait to start cooking! ![]()
well, good for you, it’s never too late to start eating healthy. Cooking and eating at home is definitely a good start, it’s where you can control your fat and salt intake. There are so many variations you can do I don’t really know where to start for suggestions. I get most of my recipes from allrecipes.com, you can type in what you’re looking for and they’re pretty good at finding it for you. I think starting off with the basics of homecooked meals will be good for you. no take-out, no junk food. There are plenty of tasty snacks you can make yourself. As you start to get more into it, I would suggest eating fruit for breakfast, in many different combinations, most people find fruit salad easy, and fruit smoothies are delicious. You want to eat your fruit seperate from other things. There’s a method of food combining that can really help you get healthy. The basics are that veggies combine with anything, but the other groups don’t combine well together. Anyways…. Baked chicken breasts with a bit of lemon, pepper and olive oil, some salad, steamed veggies, rice. Once you get into it, there are so many wonderful meals to try. There’s also a great site, sparkpeople.com, it’s a bit of a diet site, but it does custom meal plans, which is really nice when you don’t know where to start (including recipes and shopping list) well, best of luck!

Hiya saruh.
It is really great to see that you care about not only your health, but the health of your parents.
Anything that can be made at home, can be made healthy with minimum changes and have the food still taste great.
I just went through major medical issues that has had me change what I take in as far as food. The two biggest things that you can change straight off the bat is the amounts of sodium and cholesterol that he is taking in; both are ermines to his heart, and all others as well.
I at this time want to give you more information, but I must leave for work in just a few minutes. But, when I get home in the morning, and this question is still open, I’ll add more.
Sorry, but I must run before I am late.
Good luck and Best wishes.
You may have to recheck the question on answers in mid morning,
I don’t believe if I add to it, that you’ll be informed of any updates.
I am sorry, but every time I add things to this, they are erased for some reason.
Look at the nutrition labels on any products you buy, keep the sodium and cholesterol levels closes to 0 as possible, and please refrain from using salt, big time killer.

Look up a Swiss Steak recipe. I’m sure you could substitute healthier chicken for the steak and it’s got lots of yummy onion and bell peppers and garlic and tomatoes in it. You could serve the sauce over a whole wheat pasta if you wanted to go all out healthy, but I just use regular bow tie pasta. My husband loves this, and it’s hard for me to get him to eat any veggies.

well i’m trying to eat healthy as well… so when cooking meat… try not to use butter and or oil… just use the meat itself. when cooking steak for an example, just use garlic and or dry rub and let stand on pan for 6-8minutes and then flip it. the steak produces it’s own juice when cooking. so try that. and also nowadays there’s all the whole grain stuff so buy whole grain and whole wheat products and try to push that as the main meal then the meats. also instead of garlic bread with butter, try bread, garlic and steam some shrimp and then cook the shrimp into some garlic and make a light shrimp po’boy garlic bread. and or, steam the chicken and mix it into a salad with dark greens and sizzle a little bit of dressing. and or make your own dressing always lighter in calories. or boil the chicken and toss it into a salad there for when using the dressing that would be the only flavor it has.
